Bokkie Detail

Description

Started during lockdown, this obsessively stitched piece went on and on for ages, not planned but just growing. I wanted to hand stitch in a way that related to Kuba cloth, without trying to be a Kuba cloth.

Stitching was done in a variety of indigo and earthy brown threads to give texture and pattern.

Buttons and ostrich shell beads are added embellishments and the backing is one of my old dresses.

Bokkie is pregnant and running across the veld to find safe passage to protect her babies and find water.

Making this calmed me and I couldn't help thinking of Louise Bourgeois words; "The act of sewing is a process of emotional repair"

Materials - Commercial, hand printed and hand dyed cotton fabrics.

Cotton threads, buttons, commercial and ostrich shell beads.

Machine and hand appliqued, stitched and beaded.
