Tree:  Lonesome and old.

Tree:  Lonesome and old.
Paul Schutte

Title: Tree:  Lonesome and old.

Description:

The shapes that appear on the rock wall that forms the body of the skirt, illustrate the San belief that the female apron (seen on the right of the skirt) was filled with fertile potency and often worn by the male shaman in addition to his own loincloth (seen on the left of the skirt) when trying to access the spiritual realm through trance. This placing of male an female aprons and loincloths on either side of the skirt is deliberate, as it brings them together when tied at the back, symbolising the importance of both male and female energy in creating the balance of life.

Dimensions: 53 cm wide x 94 cm

Materials: Cotton. Machine pieced, machine quilted, raw edge appliqued.

Exhibition: Group exhibition, Potchefstroom, 2016 and Val d'Argent, France at the European Textile meeting 2013
